Statement From the Board of Trustees
28 November 2025
Tēnā koutou katoa,
In light of the significant national discussion surrounding Te Tiriti o Waitangi (The Treaty of Waitangi) and its implications for education in Aotearoa New Zealand, the Brookby School Board wishes to communicate our clear, ongoing commitment to our community, students, and staff.
Brookby School is guided by our Te Ara Brookby values of Whanaungatanga (belonging), Mana (respect), Ako (learning), and Manaakitanga (friendship). These values underpin our approach to governance and decision-making, ensuring we foster an environment that is accepting and inclusive of all cultures.
We are committed to upholding the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi within the Brookby School environment, which is fundamental to our legal obligations and our deep-seated belief in creating the best educational outcomes for every child.
Partnership and Guidance
Our commitment to Partnership is central to how we operate. We understand the vital importance of building strong, meaningful relationships:
Equity and Achievement
Equity in education is a primary focus, embodying the spirit of Ako—learning and teaching for all.
Language, Culture, and Care
We believe that celebrating Language and Culture is an expression of Manaakitanga—showing care and respect to all within our school community.
The Brookby School Board is resolute in its commitment to these actions, ensuring that our school remains a place where every student can thrive. We look forward to continuing this important work alongside our entire community.

Tēnā koutou katoa,

Partnership and Guidance
Our commitment to Partnership is central to how we operate. We understand the vital importance of building strong, meaningful relationships:
- Strengthening Relationship with Mana Whenua: We will continue to strengthen our relationship with our mana whenua Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki (the local people who hold historical and territorial rights in this area). This partnership is key to understanding and responding to the unique needs and cultural landscape of our community, ensuring our decisions are grounded in respect and local knowledge.
- Incorporating Tikanga: We will continue to use tikanga (Māori customs and protocols) as guidance in our decision-making process. Incorporating tikanga into our operational and governance activities helps ensure that our practices reflect the foundational bicultural heritage of New Zealand, guided by the value of Mana.
Equity and Achievement
Equity in education is a primary focus, embodying the spirit of Ako—learning and teaching for all.
- Achieving Equitable Outcomes for Māori Students: As required by the Education and Training Act 2020. This means dedicating resources, developing targeted policies, and implementing practices designed to support the highest possible standard of educational achievement for all students. We are committed to removing barriers and fostering success.
Language, Culture, and Care
We believe that celebrating Language and Culture is an expression of Manaakitanga—showing care and respect to all within our school community.
- Reflecting Cultural Diversity: We will take reasonable steps to ensure that the policies and practices for the school reflect New Zealand’s cultural diversity. This broad commitment ensures that we maintain an environment that is welcoming, safe, and affirming for students and families from all cultural backgrounds, strengthening our school-wide Whanaungatanga.
The Brookby School Board is resolute in its commitment to these actions, ensuring that our school remains a place where every student can thrive. We look forward to continuing this important work alongside our entire community.
Ngā mihi nui,
The Brookby School Board
