Reading & Spelling Rules

At Brookby School, we teach reading and spelling through explicit, evidence-based instruction. As students progress, they learn the spelling patterns, rules and concepts that help them both decode (read) unfamiliar words and encode (spell) words accurately.

To support learning at home, we are pleased to share these Reading & Spelling Rule Guides, developed as part of the iDeaL Learning Approach by Learning MATTERS, and shared with permission. These guides use the same language and terminology that we use in the classroom, helping families reinforce learning with consistent explanations and shared understanding.

While the spelling rule itself remains the same, the example words become more complex as students progress through the stages. This means your child may be learning the same concept as an older student, but with words that are appropriate for their stage of learning. The examples in each guide reflect the stage at which that concept is typically taught.

Each Reading & Spelling Rule Guide includes:
  • A short YouTube video explaining the rule.
  • A downloadable PDF outlining the rule, key teaching points, and examples appropriate for that stage of learning.

We encourage you to watch the video and use the guide when supporting your child at home. Using the same language at school and at home helps children develop a deeper understanding of how our writing system works. This consistency strengthens both reading and spelling, giving children the confidence to apply their knowledge when they encounter new words.
